Design & Historical Facts

This beautifully designed medallion commemorates the untimely passing of Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817,

Princess Charlotte of Wales passed away on November 6, 1817, at the age of 21 due to complications following childbirth.

Her tragic death occurred after a grueling 51-hour labor at Claremont House, where she gave birth to a stillborn son. Charlotte’s death plunged the nation into profound mourning as she was seen as a symbol of hope and a contrast to her unpopular father, George IV.

Pubic grieving was so intense that an armed guard was posted to prevent the public from accessing her coffin. Her funeral was held at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, which was attended by thousands of mourners. This immense sorrow and the resulting succession crisis led to the subsequent rise of Queen Victoria, who was born to one of Charlotte’s uncles after his hasty marriage.
