The 1996 Royal Mint Deluxe UK Proof Coin Collection is a prestigious annual proof set issued by The Royal Mint and presented in its official deluxe presentation case with certificate of authenticity. Struck to the Royal Mint’s highest proof standard, the collection contains examples of the year’s circulating coinage together with two significant commemorative issues celebrating important events of 1996.

Each coin was struck using specially prepared dies and polished blanks, creating the frosted designs and mirror-like fields that distinguish proof coinage from standard circulation issues. The set provides an excellent representation of British coinage during the mid-1990s and remains highly popular amongst collectors of modern Royal Mint proof sets.

A notable highlight is the commemorative Football European Championships £2 coin, issued to mark the UEFA European Championship tournament hosted by England in 1996. Also included is the commemorative Crown celebrating the 70th Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, featuring a depiction of Windsor Castle with three flags flying from the Round Tower, symbolising the Queen’s enduring role as monarch.

Presented in its original Royal Mint deluxe case, this collection combines superb craftsmanship, historical significance, and strong collector appeal.

Historical Background

The year 1996 was marked by both sporting celebration and royal commemoration. England hosted the UEFA European Football Championship, prompting the issue of a commemorative £2 coin celebrating one of the most significant sporting events held in Britain during the decade.

The same year also marked the 70th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. To commemorate the occasion, The Royal Mint issued a special Crown depicting Windsor Castle, one of the monarch’s principal residences and an enduring symbol of the British monarchy. The design reflects the Queen’s long service and her close association with Windsor throughout her reign.

Royal Mint deluxe proof collections from this era remain highly sought after due to their quality presentation, limited mintages, and inclusion of commemorative coins marking important moments in modern British history.
