The 1882 Portuguese India 1 Rupee is one of the most distinctive late‑colonial silver coins struck at the Goa Mint during the reign of King Luís I. This series combines European engraving with Indian monetary tradition, making it highly desirable among collectors of world silver and colonial coinage.
Struck in .917 fine silver, the coin has excellent weight and presence, with crisp engraving typical of Goa Mint production in the late 19th century.
The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese coat of arms, flanked by decorative flourishes. Above the arms appears the inscription: INDIA PORTUGUEZA Below the arms is the denomination: UMA RUPIA This layout is characteristic of the Luís I Goa issues and differs from earlier and later Portuguese‑India rupees.
The reverse features a finely engraved portrait of King Luís I. Around the portrait runs the full Latin legend: LUDOVICUS I PORTUG ET ALGARB REX and the date 1882
