1928 King George V Silver Half Crown

This silver Half Crown was struck in 1928 during the reign of King George V and forms part of the distinctive modified silver coinage introduced following the redesign of Britain’s circulating currency in 1927. Featuring the portrait of King George V by Sir Bertram Mackennal, the coin represents an important period in twentieth-century British numismatic history.
The Half Crown was one of the largest and most substantial silver denominations in regular circulation, valued at two shillings and sixpence. Widely used throughout Britain and the British Empire, it played a significant role in everyday commercial transactions and remains a highly popular denomination amongst collectors.
The reverse displays the attractive crowned quartered shield of the Royal Arms designed by George Kruger Gray. This heraldic design, introduced in 1927, replaced the earlier shield and scroll reverse and became one of the defining features of late George V silver coinage.
Its impressive size, historic significance, and attractive design make the 1928 Half Crown an excellent addition to collections of British silver coins, George V issues, and pre-decimal currency.
Historical Background
By 1928 Britain was firmly established in the inter-war period, adapting to the social and economic changes that followed the First World War. Coinage issued during this era reflected a move towards modernised artistic designs, with George Kruger Gray contributing several iconic reverses that would become synonymous with British numismatics.
The Half Crown remained one of the most important silver denominations in circulation and was frequently encountered in daily transactions. Although struck in .500 fine silver following the reduction in silver content introduced in 1920, these coins continue to attract collectors for their historical appeal, elegant heraldic designs, and connection to the reign of King George V.
