Malawi Specimen Album of Banknotes – 1964 Independence Issue

10 Shillings · £1 · £5 · Serial A000000 · UNC Specimen Condition · £1200

A highly important and rare Malawi specimen album, issued in 1964 to mark the country’s independence. This presentation folder contains three specimen notes — 10 Shillings, £1, and £5 — each with the serial number A000000.

Unlike most specimen issues, these notes are not hole‑punched, remaining in pristine UNC specimen condition. The album was formally presented to Sir Glyn Jones, GCMG, MBE, the last Governor of Nyasaland and first Governor‑General of independent Malawi, making this a piece of exceptional historical and numismatic significance.

Notes Included

  • Obverse (all denominations): Portrait of Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Malawi’s first President, with a fishing scene in the background symbolising Lake Malawi.
  • Reverse (all denominations): Agricultural scenes, highlighting Malawi’s farming economy — tobacco, maize, and rural cultivation themes.
  • Serial Number: A000000 on each note
  • Catalogue References: Pick #2s (10 Shillings), Pick #3s (£1), Pick #4s (£5)

Historical Note

Malawi achieved independence from Britain in 1964, and these first‑issue banknotes symbolised the birth of the new nation. Specimen sets were prepared for dignitaries and officials, but very few survive intact in their original folders. The association with Sir Glyn Jones, a central figure in the transition from colonial Nyasaland to independent Malawi, adds unique provenance and historical weight.

This album is an outstanding rarity for collectors of African independence issues, specimen banknotes, and colonial‑to‑independence transitions.
