Description

The 1804 Bank of England Dollar is one of the most distinctive and historically significant British silver issues of the early 19th century. Struck as emergency coinage during a severe shortage of regal silver, these pieces were produced by overstriking Spanish 8 Reales at the Soho Mint, Birmingham, under the direction of Matthew Boulton.

The obverse features the laureate and draped bust of King George III, while the reverse shows Britannia seated left, surrounded by maritime and commercial symbols, all enclosed within a garter bearing the denomination and topped with the characteristic five‑turreted “castle” crown.

Although dated 1804, these dollars were struck over several years and circulated at a value of five shillings. Their hybrid nature — British designs over foreign host coins — makes them a fascinating study piece and a favourite among collectors of British milled silver, trade coinage, and early industrial‑era minting.
