Historical Note
This medallion was struck to celebrate the dynastic marriage of the Prince of Wales and Caroline of Brunswick. The reverse imagery of Hymen, god of marriage, uniting the couple’s arms under blazing torches, symbolises harmony and dynastic union. In reality, the marriage was deeply troubled, with the couple separating soon after the birth of their daughter, Princess Charlotte. The medal thus reflects the idealised hopes of the time, standing today as both a commemorative and a poignant reminder of George IV’s turbulent personal life.
