1844 Great Britain Crown – Victoria Young Head, Cinquefoil Stops

KM# 741 Spink 3882 ESC 281 Bull 2562

This 1844 Victoria Crown coin is a distinguished and historically significant issue from the early Victorian period, struck at the Royal Mint in London during the eighth year of Queen Victoria’s reign. It features the elegant Young Head portrait of Queen Victoria, designed by William Wyon RA, one of the most celebrated engravers in British numismatic history. The Queen is depicted facing left, her hair tied with a ribbon, embodying the neoclassical style that defined Wyon’s work and became a hallmark of Victorian coinage.

The reverse, engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen, presents a crowned shield bearing the arms of England, Scotland, and Ireland, encircled by a laurel wreath. This classical motif symbolises unity and strength, and reflects the artistic sensibilities of the mid-19th century. The edge bears the incuse legend “DECUS ET TUTAMEN. ANNO REGNI VIII.”, meaning “An ornament and a safeguard. Year of reign eight,” punctuated by cinquefoil stops, a distinctive feature specific to this year’s issue.

The 1844 Crown is a superb addition to any collection of Victorian silver, offering both aesthetic appeal and numismatic value.
