1887 Queen Victoria Jubilee Head Silver Shilling

This silver Shilling was struck in 1887 during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year and features the distinctive Jubilee Head portrait designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm. Introduced in 1887 to commemorate fifty years of Victoria’s reign, the Jubilee coinage marked a significant departure from the familiar Young Head design that had appeared on British coins for nearly half a century.
The obverse displays Queen Victoria wearing a small crown and veil, whilst the reverse features the crowned cruciform shield design by Leonard Charles Wyon. Combining historical importance with an iconic Victorian portrait, Jubilee Head Shillings remain highly sought after by collectors of British silver coinage.
Struck in sterling silver and circulating throughout the British Empire during the height of Victorian Britain, the 1887 Shilling is an enduring reminder of one of the most significant periods in British history.
An excellent addition to any collection of Victorian silver coins, shillings, or British pre-decimal currency.
Historical Background
The year 1887 marked Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, celebrating fifty years on the British throne. To commemorate the occasion, a completely new coinage portrait was introduced across Britain’s silver and gold denominations. The resulting Jubilee Head design represented a modernised image of the ageing monarch and remained in use until the introduction of the Old Head coinage in 1893.
The shilling was one of the principal denominations of Victorian currency, representing twelve pence and forming the foundation of everyday commercial transactions. During the late nineteenth century, shillings circulated extensively throughout Britain and the wider Empire, making them one of the most recognisable coins of the period.
Today, Jubilee Head Shillings are collected both as historic commemoratives of Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and as key coins within a complete Victorian silver series.
