1887 Queen Victoria Jubilee Head Silver Sixpence

This silver Sixpence was struck in 1887 during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year and features the distinctive Jubilee Head portrait designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm. Introduced to commemorate fifty years of Victoria’s reign, the Jubilee coinage replaced the long-running Young Head design and marked the beginning of a new chapter in Victorian numismatic history.
The sixpence was one of the most useful and widely circulated denominations within Britain’s pre-decimal currency system. Struck in sterling silver, it was regularly used in everyday transactions throughout Britain and the wider Empire. Today, these attractive Victorian silver coins remain highly collectible, combining historical significance with classic Royal Mint craftsmanship.
The reverse features the denomination surrounded by a wreath and surmounted by the royal crown, a design that became synonymous with Victorian sixpences and remains instantly recognisable to collectors.
This 1887 issue represents an important first-year Jubilee Head coin and an excellent addition to any collection of Victorian silver coinage.
Historical Background
The year 1887 marked the fiftieth anniversary of Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne. To celebrate this extraordinary milestone, a completely new portrait was introduced across Britain’s silver and gold coinage. Designed by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, the Jubilee Head portrayed Victoria wearing a small crown and widow’s veil, reflecting her status as both monarch and Empress of India.
The sixpence occupied an important place in everyday Victorian life and remained one of Britain’s most popular silver denominations. Jubilee Head issues are particularly sought after as they commemorate one of the most significant events of Victoria’s reign and represent the first major redesign of British coinage since the introduction of the Young Head portrait in 1838.
