  • 1836 Great Britain Halfcrown – William IV, Bare Head Issue

KM# 714.2 Spink 3834 ESC 2416 Bull 2482

This 1836 William IV Halfcrown is a classic silver issue from the final year of King William IV’s reign, struck at the Royal Mint in London. It features the bare head portrait of William IV, facing right, designed by William Wyon RA. The obverse legend reads “GULIELMUS IIII D: G: BRITANNIAR: REX F: D:”, translating to “William the Fourth, by the Grace of God, King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith.”

The reverse, engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen, displays a crowned and mantled shield of arms, with the date “ANNO 1836” below. The shield bears the arms of England, Scotland, and Ireland in the quadrants, with the arms of Hanover in the centre — a reflection of the monarch’s dual role as King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover. The coin’s edge is reeded, and the overall design is bold and well-balanced, typical of the late Georgian period.

The 1836 Halfcrown is valued for its historical significance, solid silver content, and classic engraving. While not rare, examples in collectable condition are increasingly sought after by collectors of pre-Victorian silver.

A fine addition to any British coin collection, this piece offers both aesthetic appeal and historical depth — a tangible link to the final years before the Victorian age.
