This rare and evocative bronze medallion commemorates the birth of Prince Charles Edward Stuart — later known as “Bonnie Prince Charlie” — born on 31 December 1720 in Rome to James Francis Edward Stuart (the Old Pretender) and Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska. It was engraved by Norbert Roëttiers, a member of the famed Roëttiers family of medallists, and struck in support of the Jacobite cause.
Obverse
Features conjoined busts of James III and Queen Clementina, both facing right. James is shown in classical armour and cloak; Clementina wears a veil and draped gown in Roman style.

Reverse
An allegorical figure of Providence stands holding the infant Prince Charles in her arms beside a globe prominently displaying the British Isles — symbolising divine favour and the hope of Stuart restoration.
