This 1875 Halfcrown is a handsome example of mid-Victorian silver coinage, struck at the Royal Mint in London during the reign of Queen Victoria. It features the Young Head portrait of Victoria, designed by William Wyon RA, facing left with her hair tied in a ribbon — a design that remained in use for over four decades and is admired for its classical elegance.
The reverse, engraved by Jean Baptiste Merlen, displays a crowned shield of arms within an olive wreath, representing England, Scotland, and Ireland. Below the wreath are the national floral emblems: the rose, thistle, and shamrock. The surrounding legend reads “BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:”, Latin for “Queen of the Britains, Defender of the Faith.”
