This elegant French commemorative medallion was struck to mark the inauguration of the Chapelle Saint-Ferdinand in Paris, dedicated to Notre Dame de la Compassion and built in memory of Ferdinand Philippe, Duke of Orléans — eldest son of King Louis-Philippe I. The chapel was consecrated on 11 July 1843, one year after Ferdinand’s tragic death in a carriage accident.
